Use the Friends of Friends feature to find out if you have friends in common with other people on Tinder.
How does it work?
After syncing your contacts, if you and another person on Tinder share any mutual connections, and if that other person has also opted into Friends of Friends, you’ll see the names of those connections displayed on their profile. You won’t see all of your contacts, just (1) people you know who are also Tinder members and who have opted into Friends of Friends and (2) the number of other mutual connections who are not opted-in (including non-Tinder members).
For example:
- If Member A has Person B in their contact list,
- and Member C also has Person B in their contact list,
-
Then:
- If Person B is a Tinder member who has opted in to Friends of Friends, Member A and Member C will see that they have Person B in common, when they see each other on Tinder.
- If Person B is not a Tinder member or has not opted into Friends of Friends, Member A and Member C will see that they have 1 contact in common when they see each other on Tinder. They will not see that the contact in common is Person B.
Other Tinder members using the Friends of Friends feature will be able to see you as a mutual connection. Mutual connections who are not on Tinder or using the Friends of Friends feature will not have their names displayed. If there’s anyone you want to avoid seeing or being seen by on Tinder, you can block a contact(s) before using this feature.
How can I see Friends of Friends?
At the moment, the Friends of Friends Feature has limited availability in select test markets. Not everyone on Tinder has access yet.
If you have access to Friends of Friends:
- Open Tinder
- Tap your profile icon
- Go to Settings
- Scroll down and tap Friends of Friends
- Let us know if you want to block anyone in your contact list
- Follow the prompt to import the rest of your contacts
Can I see Friends of Friends, but avoid being shown as a friend?
It doesn’t work that way - when you turn the feature on, you’ll be able to see mutual friends and be shown as a mutual friend.
If there’s someone you want to avoid seeing or being seen by on Tinder, and you have their contact info, you can block that contact before you start using the feature. Follow the steps under How can I see Friends of Friends? to get started.
What happens if I turn off Friends of Friends?
By turning off Friends of Friends, you’ll stop seeing mutual connections displayed on other people’s profiles, your name will no longer be shown as a mutual friend, and any contacts you imported will be deleted. You can turn off the Friends of Friends feature in Tinder’s settings, at any time.
How does Tinder use my contact information?
Friends of Friends is a Tinder feature that requires the use of your device’s contact list. Once you’ve given us permission to access your contact list, we collect phone number information from your contacts in order to first check whether that contact is a member of Tinder that has also opted-in to Friends of Friends. If they are, we process that information to display those connections and help identify common connections you have with others on Tinder. If your contact is not yet a Tinder member or has not opted in to Friends of Friends, we securely store the contact information you uploaded and will not show their name unless they do join Tinder and/or opt-in; however, we will still display the total number of mutual connections who are not Tinder members who have also opted in.
As a Tinder member, you may have previously provided Tinder permission to access your contact list, such as when using our Block Contacts feature. If you have any questions about how Tinder uses this personal data, please review our Privacy Policy.
