Sharing your most authentic self
At Tinder, we're dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive space for all. We continually explore new ways to make sure your experience on our platform isn't only positive but also empowering. Prioritizing initiatives that support your authentic self-expression is at the core of what we do.
No matter where you fall on the gender and sexuality spectrum, you're welcome here. We're working on expanding our gender identities and sexual orientation options, enabling you to describe yourself accurately and confidently.
Note: We are testing an expanded selection of gender and sexual orientation options in select markets, so the experience may vary based on your location.
Why this matters
We recognize that the identities of our users are complex and multifaceted, and it's important that our platform helps reflect this diversity. Sharing your gender and sexual orientation helps us support your safety, comfort, and inclusive representation. It also helps us learn more about you and recommend potential matches that fit your preferences.
Gender and sexual orientation will only appear on your profile only if you choose to share it. We’ll do our best to remove it automatically for LGBTQIA+ users in places where their identities and expressions are criminalized or stigmatized.
Updating your gender or sexual orientation
You can update your gender or sexual orientation at any time by following these steps:
- Open Tinder
- Tap the Profile icon
- Tap the pencil icon or Edit Profile
- Scroll down to ‘Gender’ or ‘Sexual Orientation’
Gender updates: Pick from "Man", "Woman", or "Beyond Binary". Additional options may be available to further help you best identify yourself. You can choose as many gender choices as you identify with. You need to select at least one of the primary categories.
Sexual orientation updates: You can choose however you want to describe your sexual orientation or not say at all- it's totally up to you! This part isn't necessary.
Displaying your gender or sexual orientation
While editing your profile, you have the flexibility to manage the visibility of your gender and sexual orientation. You can choose to display this information just below your name, hide it completely, or only show certain aspects that you're comfortable with. To see how your choices look, you can preview your profile directly on the 'Edit Profile' screen. Your gender and sexual orientation preferences will be suppressed in locations where your identity may be penalized for your safety.
FAQs
Why "Beyond Binary" instead of "Nonbinary"?
We use "Beyond Binary" to inclusively represent those who don't feel aligned with the traditional categories of "Man" or "Woman," including those who identify as Gender Fluid, GNC, Intersex, among others. This terminology respects the unique experiences of everyone on Tinder.
What if I don't see my gender or sexual orientation on Tinder?
Our list of identities is continually evolving, thanks to input from inclusivity experts and feedback from users like you. If your gender or sexual orientation isn't listed, please use the 'Not listed' option to inform us. Your feedback is important in our ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
Note: Depending on your location, the ability to report an unlisted option may not be available.
Is my gender used in how others find me on Tinder?
