What's Photo Selector?
Photo Selector is an on-device tool available to help identify which photos in your camera roll might work as profile photos.
How does Photo Selector work?
First, you’ll need to generate the biometric data used to find photos of you on your device. You’ll have two choices—you can either use a profile photo with your face in it, or you can take a selfie instead.
Second, the feature selects photos from your camera roll that might work as profile photos. This selection is based on what we’ve learned makes for a good profile photo like lighting, composition, and more. The feature also filters out group photos, or photos that appear to violate our Terms of Use and Community Guidelines.
Finally, you’ll choose which of the presented photos to upload to your profile. Remember, while this tool is intended to help you, you’re ultimately responsible for what you choose to upload, including that the photos you decide to upload follow our Terms of Use and Community Guidelines, and are consistent with any local laws that might apply to your use of the Photo Selector tool.
Also, remember that you'll need to provide full or partial access to your photo library and access to your camera for this first step to work. You can always adjust your Settings to adjust the level of access, or remove it altogether once you're done.
How does Photo Selector use my data?
Here’s the best part. The Photo Selector feature operates entirely on your device, and you remain in control at all times. See below for details about how your data is used at each step of the process:
- Suggesting a profile photo: Photo Selector doesn't use biometric data to suggest a profile photo for you to use for this feature. Instead, Tinder uses a privacy-preserving tool to detect which of your profile photos has an outline of a face, without generating any biometric data or collecting details about the features of your face. This process happens entirely on your device, and Tinder doesn’t receive any information about which profile photos have a face detected in them.
- Generating and using your biometrics: Biometrics are generated from either your profile photo or your video selfie, and then compared to the photos in your camera roll. Tinder doesn't collect, store, access or otherwise receive any biometrics generated from your selfie video, profile photo, or photos on your camera roll. Instead, everything takes place entirely on your device, and all biometric data used as part of this feature is deleted from your device once you exit the feature.
- Scanning your photos: Tinder doesn't collect or access any photos from your camera roll, and the process of scanning and suggesting certain photos happens entirely on your device. Tinder only collects the photos you ultimately choose to upload to your profile.
Why don't I see photos of me with my friends in the recommendations?
Photo Selector is designed to exclude group photos. We ask that you only use this feature to find photos of you.
What if I don’t like the photos being presented to me?
If Photo Selector happens to present photos that you think aren’t your best, kindly share your feedback with us in our contact form. Your feedback plays a crucial role in helping us improve the feature.
Where's Photo Selector available?
We're currently testing this feature on Android and iOS in select markets. We hope to roll this out in more markets and platforms in the future.
