Photo Insights

Photo Insights are short descriptions of your interests, personality, or lifestyle generated by analyzing patterns in your photo library. This feature is available in select markets.

In some markets, you can choose to let us scan your camera roll for Photo Insights when you sign up for Tinder to help you set up your profile faster. We use what we learn from your photos to suggest photos, interests, and prompts you might want to add. You stay in control — nothing is added to your profile unless you choose to add it.

Accessing Photo Insights

To see your Photo Insights:

Open Tinder
Tap on the profile tab
Tap the Chemistry icon in the upper corner of your profile

Note: Photo Insights are available in select markets.

Using Photo Insights

When you opt-in to Photo Insights, we analyze your camera photos to identify key themes that help Tinder personalize your experience and better connect you with others. This includes:

Scanning: When you grant permission, a scan of your camera roll occurs directly on your device to analyze photo quality and content.
Generating Insights: Select photos are temporarily uploaded to our server to generate photo suggestions and your Photo Insights using AI technology, based on themes and objects identified in your photos. These photos are then deleted unless you add any to your profile.
Personalized Photo Suggestions: We’ll suggest photos you might want to add to your profile, for example as individual photos or collages showing off your personality. These suggestions are based on what we know about what kinds of photos tend to perform well, personalized with the lifestyle, interests, and personality themes from your Photo Insights. To get photo suggestions that include you, you may see the option to identify a photo of yourself from your camera roll, take a selfie or use a profile photo to generate biometric data to identify photos of you in your library. You’ll choose which photos you want to upload to your profile. We won’t add photos to your profile without your permission.
Personalized Profile Set-up: Where this feature is available during profile set-up, we’ll also use your Photo Insights to suggest interests to add to your profile, as well as potential topics for your “About me” and prompts that you can use to build your profile. You choose what interests and content are added to your profile.

How Photo Insights uses your data

If you opt into this feature, we perform an on-device scan of your camera roll to identify photos that we think could produce relevant insights about you, based on photo quality, content, and similarity. The identified photos are temporarily uploaded to Tinder’s servers and shared with our AI technology provider solely to create Photo Insights. Your photos are then deleted unless you choose to add them to your profile.

Your Photo Insights will be available in your Insights Hub and used to help Tinder personalize your experience and better connect you with others. We may also analyze Photo Insights to help us improve the feature. Photo Insights you don’t keep are deleted within 90 days.

Note: In some markets , your Photo Insights are used only to suggest photos, bios, and interests to add to your profile and then promptly deleted. This means that we do not keep your Photo Insights and you won’t see an Insights Hub in the app.

Photo Suggestions & Collages

If you opt into camera roll scanning, we perform an on-device scan to understand what kinds of photos you tend to have, like close-ups, full-body shots, group photos, or themes such as travel or pets. We do this by using automated technology that analyzes visual patterns in your photos. Based on these patterns, your Photo Insights, and what we know about what performs well on Tinder, a select set of photos is uploaded to Tinder and we suggest a few photos you might want to add to your profile. The goal is to help you pick clear, diverse photos that show different sides of you. Your photos are promptly deleted unless added to your profile. Your photos aren’t added to your profile unless you want to - you stay in control.

How is biometric data used for Photo Suggestions?

If you want us to suggest photos that feature you, you can generate biometric data to find photos of you on your device. You do this by identifying a reference photo of yourself from your camera roll, taking a selfie, or with an existing solo profile photo, if you have one (note: available options vary by market). Depending on the option you select, your data is processed as follows:

Suggesting a profile photo: We’ll suggest an eligible profile photo for you to use, if you have one. Tinder uses a privacy-preserving tool to detect which of your profile photos has an outline of a face, without generating any biometric data or collecting details about the features of your face. This process happens entirely on your device.
Taking a selfie: You may have the option to take a selfie. If you do this, we use your selfie to identify photos of you in your camera roll, as described in this section. Your selfie is deleted when you exit the feature.
Generating and using biometric data from your selfie or profile photo: Biometric data are generated from either the photo you confirm is you or your selfie, and then compared to the photos in your camera roll. Tinder doesn't collect, store, access or otherwise receive any biometric data generated from your selfie, profile photo, or photos on your camera roll. Instead, everything takes place entirely on your device, and the biometric data used as part of this feature is deleted from your device once you exit the feature.
Identifying a reference photo: In some markets, you may have the option to identify a photo of yourself from your camera roll. To do this, when you opt in to camera roll scanning, similar faces in photos on your camera roll are grouped together, and you will be prompted to confirm which represents you. This process happens entirely on your device. When you confirm a photo is you, a face reference, which may be considered biometric data, is compared to the photos in your camera roll to help identify photos of you and stored locally on your device to make future rescans faster. Your Face Reference is deleted when you log out of Tinder, and you can reset and delete it at anytime by:
1. Go to Settings.
2. Scroll and find Photo Suggestions.
3. Tap Stored Face Reference and select Reset Face Reference.

This step is optional, and you don’t have to take a selfie. If you choose to skip this step, we’ll still scan your camera roll to create Photo Insights, but your photo suggestions and collages may not include you.

Limitations

The technology used to create Photo Insights, suggestions, and collages is designed to be helpful and to exclude photos or insights that might violate our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines, but the technology is not 100% accurate. It may occasionally suggest photos that do not meet your personal preference or may misinterpret a lifestyle theme. Remember, while this tool is intended to help you, you're ultimately responsible for the photos and information you choose to add to your profile; please ensure they follow our Terms of Use, Community Guidelines and local laws.

Also keep in mind:

Eligibility: If you don't have enough photos, Photo Insights and photo suggestions may not be available. If you opt into camera roll scanning but don’t have enough photos, we will periodically check your camera roll for new photos to determine if you have enough photos to become eligible. If you're setting up your profile during sign-up and don't have enough photos, you can still build your profile manually.
Scanning Continuity: If interrupted, the scan will resume the next time the app is open until complete.
Rescanning: If you choose to rescan your camera roll, your old Photo Insights (if retained) will be replaced with new insights from the latest scan.

Sensitive topics

In some cases, Photo Insights and suggestions may reference themes that relate to cultural, religious, political, lifestyle, or other potentially sensitive topics based on patterns identified in your photos. These may not always accurately reflect your personal views or identity. You'll always have the opportunity to delete your Photo Insights at any time in the Insights Hub (if we keep any Photo Insights) or remove any suggested profile photo(s), bio(s), or interest(s) you added at any time in your Edit Profile settings.

Opting out or deleting your data

You're in control of your Photo Insights and what shows on your profile. You can also opt out of camera roll scanning entirely.

Insights Hub: You can manage and delete your Photo Insights at any time in the Insights Hub. To delete an insight, swipe on the insight you want to remove. Note: the Insights Hub is not available in markets where Photo Insights are not retained.
Suggested Photos & Collages: Only the suggested photos and collages you choose are added to your profile. You can remove suggested photos at any time in your Edit Profile settings, and collages in your Insights Hub.
Camera Roll Permissions: You can adjust or remove camera roll access at any time through your device’s system settings.
During sign-up: You can skip the camera roll scan entirely, or not use any suggested photos, bio and prompt topics, interests, or other profile suggestions.
After sign-up: You can remove suggested photos, interests, bio or prompt at any time in your Edit Profile settings.
