ID + Photo Verification is an optional process that allows you to show that the photo in your ID, and your profile photos, look like you. After successful verification, you’ll get a new badge on your profile to show people that you have completed the ID + Photo Verification process.
You will also be able to see whether other Tinder profiles have completed this optional process. That way you can make more informed decisions about who you interact with on Tinder.
How does ID + Photo Verification Work?
ID + Photo Verification consists of two steps: (1) Photo Verification, and (2) an ID Check. If you have already completed Photo Verification separately, you will not need to go through this first step again. You will receive "ID+ Photo Verified" status if your video selfie passes both the Photo Verification and ID Check steps.
- The Photo Verification process scans the face in your video and helps us determine whether the video was taken by a real, live person, and that it was not digitally altered or manipulated. Our facial recognition technology also detects your face in your video selfie and your profile photos, and extracts facial geometries to generate a unique number or facial geometry “template.” These templates are used to help check whether the person in your video selfie is the same person as in your ID photo and profile photos. Your facial geometry data is then retained for the life of your account to maintain your ID + Photo Verified badge, allowing you to update and change your profile photos while still maintaining your badge. Your video selfie is deleted and is not added to your profile, but we keep two screenshots from your video selfie for the purposes of auditing and managing this feature.
The ID Check step involves Tinder checking an upload of a government-issued identification document (i.e., a passport, national ID card, or driver’s license). The tool checks to see whether the photo on the ID matches the face in the Photo Verification portion and your profile photos. Tinder also checks to see whether the date of birth on the ID is over 18 and matches the information on your profile. A photo of your ID is retained for 30 days to audit this feature.
How is my ID + Photo Verification information Used?
We only use the data collected for the purpose of ID + Photo Verification. To perform the Photo Verification and ID Check processes, we store and use your facial geometry information, ID photo, and screenshots, on our Amazon Web Service (AWS) instances. This information and screenshots are deleted from our Amazon Web Services instances in the timeframes laid out below under “What will you keep after ID + Photo Verification is complete?” If you want to learn more about AWS’s privacy practices, you can click here. We do not share your facial information and screenshots with any other third parties.
What will you keep after ID + Photo Verification is complete?
We will keep two screenshots from your video selfie during the life of your account to audit and manage our Photo Verification feature. We’ll also keep the results of the Photo Verification process (i.e., verified or not). We store your facial geometry information for the life of your account in order to allow you to maintain your ID + Photo Verified Badge as you update and change your profile photos. We will also keep a photo of your ID for 30 days to audit this feature.
How do I delete my ID + Photo Verification Information?
Your ID + Photo Verification Information includes your (1) facial geometry data (which is the facial ‘template’ used to complete the Photo Verification check), (2) a copy of your ID, and (3) your video selfie screenshots. Please see below for information on how to delete these three types of data.
Facial Geometry Data
You can delete your facial geometry data by deleting your Tinder account through the app’s settings page.
Why do I need to delete my account in order to delete this data?
Tinder’s ID + Photo Verified Badge is a great way to help show potential matches that you really look like your profile pictures and the photo of your ID. To help ensure that users are not misled or confused about whether their matches are still ID + Photo Verified, we do not allow users to delete their facial geometry data (thereby disabling ID + Photo Verification) without also resetting their matches and starting again with a regular, unverified account. This requirement is intended to prevent abuse of the ID + Photo Verified Badge and to ensure other users can be confident about whether their matches continue to have ID + Photo Verified accounts.
Copy of ID
We keep a copy of your ID for 30 days to audit this feature. We do not otherwise store or extract any data from your ID, such as your address or ID number.
If you’d like to have your ID deleted before the 30-day timeline, you can delete your account as set out immediately above. We require that users delete their accounts and start again with an unverified account, for the same reasons as set out above.
