Our approach
We strive to make Tinder a safe and inclusive space for everyone. We’re always exploring new ways to ensure that your experience on our platform is positive and empowering. And we’ll continue prioritizing initiatives that encourage your most authentic self-expression.
Regardless of where you fall on the gender and sexuality spectrum, you're welcome here. That’s why we’ve been expanding our gender identities and sexual orientation selections by adding clear definitions, so our users can describe themselves accurately and confidently.
Since this experience is still evolving, it's only available to some users for now and we're doing our very best to make it accessible to everyone.
Note: For now, this feature is only available in select test markets on iOS and Android.
Why this matters
We aim to foster a more inclusive community where everyone's identities are embraced, represented, and respected so that you can most accurately represent your authentic self. We do this by deepening our understanding of gender and sexuality spectrums.
How do I update my gender and sexual orientation?
In your Tinder app, navigate to Edit Profile within your Profile Home. You can select "Man," "Woman," or "Beyond Binary". Then, you’ll be prompted to provide additional details about your gender, which will be shown on your profile only if you choose. You can edit your gender and sexual orientation at any time.
Why Beyond Binary instead of Nonbinary?
Gender is informed by a person’s unique individual experience. And those outside of the binary categories of “Man” or “Woman” might not always feel comfortable identifying as “Nonbinary”. That’s why we hold space for ALL genders including Gender Fluid, GNC, Intersex, and others beyond the binary.
What does Tinder do with my info? Am I required to add gender or sexual orientation?
You always get to decide what is shown on your profile. We use your information to learn more about you and recommend potential matches that fit your preferences. You’re required to add your gender but sexual orientation is optional.
Why should I provide this information?
Sharing your gender and sexual orientation helps us support your safety, comfort, and inclusive representation. Your information will only appear on your profile when you say so. We’ll do our best to remove it automatically for LGBTQIA+ users in places where their identity and expressions are criminalized.
Where does my gender and sexual orientation appear on my Tinder profile?
Once gender and sexual orientation selections are added to your profile, you can preview your profile on the Edit Profile screen. Gender and sexual orientation information (if added) will appear right below the user's name on the profile.
What if I don't see my gender or sexual orientation represented in the lists?
We’re constantly working with inclusivity experts and evolving our approach. We always welcome your feedback. To help us improve, please let us know if we’re missing anything by sharing your feedback in the ‘Not listed’ section.
Will my gender be used in how others find me on Tinder?
As we evolve towards a more inclusive and welcoming search experience, we want you to connect with as many people as possible while maintaining control over how you appear in searches.
That’s why we ask “What’s your gender?” followed by “Include you in searches for” so you have control over how you want to be discovered by other users.
Can I use gender to decide who I see on Tinder?
As of today, our discovery search categories include “Women,” “Men,” or “Everyone.” We are working to expand your selections to include users with genders outside of the cisgendered binary.
